Alice Springs
Caught our flight over to Alice during which we got the best beef sandwiches ever...so good we asked for more! Touched down into a very sunny Alice having heard reports of cold temperatures it didn't seem that bad to us! Checked into our new home for the next 4 nights and set about having a quick exploration which was indeed very quick, not much to entertain us other than 3 large supermarkets (more reduced foods to be had), so not a great start for our four days here! Took ourselves off on a quick jaunt to the outskirts of town, mainly looking for drunken Abos as Georgie had described that they were everywhere. Much to our utter dismay they were few and far between and stone cold sober acting like they were extras from 'Shaun of the Dead' - as we were to find out this is thanks to new liquor laws which prevents the sale of Goon (Boxed wine) in the cheap 4 litre bags! This has given the Abos absolutely no purpose in life anymore...with no jobs or place in society, they now can't even enjoy their one and only pastime...drinking!!!
For those who don't know anything about Alice...it is a small town in the middle of Oz, with nothing but dry bush and red sand for thousands of miles around - this is not the place for anyone who craves excitement in their life! Entertaining ourselves here for 4 days was going to be hard work! We finished our first days walk rather abruptly as once the sun had gone down it was indeed bloody freezing (+1 degree). The following day we got up early to sample the provided breakfast which ran from 5.30 - 8am - not very sociable breakfast times as it required you to wear Arctic style clothing, this however was a blessing in disguise as it made a perfect excuse to go back to bed every morning till about 10.30am by which time the sun had done its job and warmed up the day! During the next three days we walked every available walking track / road and visited every free attraction (few and far between) that this small town can offer....always returning back to our room by 5pm to avoid the imminent cold that followed every sunset, to drink beers and watch TV. Yee ha!
Digger Land!!! We weren't kidding about there being nothing to do here!!
