Byron Bay/Surfers Paradise..
We stayed in Byron for a couple of nights lapping up the touristy feel before giving it the elbow and moving 15mins away to a small beachside town called Lennox Head, here we got fantastic accomodation comprising of a self contained apartment which we shared with just one other English couple. Lennox head sits on a 7 mile beach and although this was very picturesque we realised that once night falls it really was a small town and there wouldn't be enough to keep us entertained there!! So the next day we begrudgingly left our luxury apartment to get the bus up to Surfers Paradise!
Unfortunately when we arrived it was raining and due to this and the numerous tower blocks it looked nothing like 'Paradise'...more like a gloomy Benidorm! It did clear up and we spent the first day checking out the central area and the beach....the surf looked good so we decided we'd hire boards for the following day. The next day the wind had picked up and when we got down to the beach the waves were very choppy and pretty big out the back! But we weren't put off and out we strode with our super cool small (7'2") hard boards, looking like proper surfers.....the sharade was soon shattered as we realised there was no way of riding these waves unless you were a semi-pro....but we had fun trying!!!
That evening we got the bus down the coast to the small town of Nobby's Beach to meet up with some Irish guys who were on our Surf Tour and were renting a house there with friends! Turned out to be a very nice house with tonnes of space, so the next day we packed our bags and accepted the invitation of a free night's accomodation! Spent most of the day lounging on the beach, playing frisbee and frolicking in the sea!! Got cracked into the beers and drinking games, after everyone had enjoyed one of Chris's speciality curries...it really was fine Indian cuisine complete with homemade poppodums! We headed into town later but our evening was spoilt by some stupid doorman who failed to let us into the bar because we didn't have ID!!! Age limit was 18, he agreed we looked at least 24 but still no go.....go figure???
That morning the Irish guys didn't surface until gone 11am (they'd had a good night!) so we entertained oursleves playing football in the front garden....Chris being dazzled by Georgie's vast array of footballing skills (I think he was still drunk!!!) So that was the Gold Coast complete and we headed off that day to Brisbane....
Look at all those hiddeous tower blocks...what a load of arse!!!
